PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard are able to wet mop floors found in a residential, commercial, industrial or institutional environment.

Qualifying learners are able to:
  • Plan and prepare to wet mop floors.
  • Spot mop floors.
  • Wet mop floors.
  • Perform end of task procedures after wet mopping floors. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at ABET Level 3.
  • The Unit standards:

    > Understand basic cleaning principles (Level 1).
    > Use chemicals in the cleaning services environment (Level 1). 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The scope of this unit standard is for any person who needs to wet mop floors.
  • In the context of this unit standard, floors include hard and resilient floors. Water sensitive floors and access floors may be wet mopped if included in the customer's cleaning specification..All textile or soft floors are excluded. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan and prepare to wet mop floors. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Range of floors that could be wet mopped includes, but is not limited to:
  • Hard floors - include but are not limited to, tiles, stone, granite, marble, terrazzo, quarry tiles, terracotta, ceramic tiles, slate, porcelain, sealed concrete.
  • Resilient floors - include but are not limited to vinyl, sealed wood, linoleum, profiled rubber. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Personal protective equipment is used in accordance with worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons for using personal protective equipment are explained in terms of General Safety Regulations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of personal protective equipment includes, but is not limited to, overalls, footwear, gloves and dust mask.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Floor surfaces that require wet mopping are identified in accordance with scope of work, access and cleaning specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The correct mopping equipment is selected in accordance with worksite procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range includes, but is not limited to mobile single or double buckets, wringer, short or longhaired mop, flat mop, mop sticks and holder, butterfly mop.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Chemicals are selected for the identified tasks in accordance with worksite procedures and reasons for the selection are explained in terms of the surface and dirt. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The reason why special care needs to be taken when wet mopping water-sensitive floors is explained in terms of the consequences of over-wetting. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of floors needing special care:
  • Water sensitive floors includes, but is not limited to untreated wood and other absorbent surfaces that would be negatively affected by water.
  • Access floors. These are suspended floors constructed of removable panels that may themselves be washable, but cover electrical and computer wiring that could be damaged by the presence of water.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Wet floor warning signs are placed correctly before wet mopping in accordance with worksite procedures and reasons for doing so are explained in terms of General Safety Regulations and basic cleaning principles. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Spot mop floors. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The use and benefits of spot mopping are defined in accordance with the cleaning specification and basic cleaning principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct method of spot mopping the floor is demonstrated in accordance with the worksite procedure and basic cleaning principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The single and double mopping bucket systems are demonstrated in accordance with the worksite procedure and the difference between the two systems is explained in terms of effectiveness and productivity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The mop is wrung-out and the cleaning water changed in accordance with the worksite procedure and the reasons for doing so are explained in terms of basic cleaning principles and the use of cleaning chemicals. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Wet mop floors. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Floors are mopped using a single bucket and a double bucket system in accordance with the worksite procedure and basic cleaning principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The figure-of-eight mopping method is demonstrated in accordance with the worksite procedure and the reason for the use of this method is explained in terms of productivity and basic cleaning principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons why care and attention are given to avoid dirtying furniture, fittings, skirting boards, walls or adjacent areas during the mopping process is explained in terms of customer service and basic cleaning principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The procedure in the event of someone falling on a wet floor during the mopping process is explained in terms of General Safety Regulations. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform end of task procedures after wet mopping floors. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All floors that have been wet mopped are checked to ensure the level of cleanliness is in accordance with the worksite procedure and basic cleaning principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All waste generated during the wet mopping of hard and resilient floors is disposed of in accordance with worksite procedure and environmental principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All equipment, consumables and chemicals used for wet mopping floors are removed, cleaned and stored in accordance with worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Problems and damage identified during the wet mopping of floors are reported, and reasons for doing so are explained in accordance with worksite procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of problems and damage could include, but is not limited to, accidents and personal injury, damaged/missing equipment and/or personal protective equipment; insufficient or incorrect chemicals and/or consumables, staff problems, customer requirements, the cleaning schedule and broken, cracked or loose tiles.

  • Access floors refers to suspended floors constructed of removable panels that may themselves be washable, but cover electrical and computer wiring that could be damaged by the presence of water.
  • Cleaning services environment refers to anywhere where cleaning takes place.
  • Cleaning specification refers to the list of floors to be maintained and the frequency of cleaning agreed.
  • Environment (as in 'a residential, commercial, industrial or institutional environment') refers to buildings or structures that contain floors to be wet mopped.
  • Frequency refers to the regularity or schedule of wet mopping floors e.g. daily, weekly, etc.
