This unit standard is for persons working in the International Trade environment especially within exports. The learner is able to ensure compliance with international packing/marking standards.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Interpret the relevant international packing and marking standards relevant to specific consignments.
  • Define packaging standards in terms of the insurance requirements.
  • Calculate the cost implications of conformance to packing and marking standards and requirements.
  • Generate appropriate packing specifications.

    Interpret the relevant international packing and marking standards relevant to specific consignments. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The packing and marking of dangerous goods are identified, explained and assessed according to international packing and marking requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    ICOA, IMO, SANS and SABS codes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The classification of dangerous goods when accepting and processing dangerous goods for transportation by air, sea or road are explained, verified and applied according to international packing and marking requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The packaging and marking of non-dangerous goods are identified, explained and assessed according to international packaging and marking requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Include but not limited to perishable, live stock.

    Non-dangerous goods are accepted and processed for transportation by air, sea or road according to international packing and marking requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of calculating the cost implications of conformance to packing and marking standards and requirements for export transactions are explained in terms of company profits and long-term viability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Financial options applicable to each transaction are evaluated and an option is selected in accordance with company policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Cost implications are communicated and negotiated with involved parties in accordance with company policy.

    Packaging groups are assessed based on the classification and identification of the dangerous and non-dangerous goods to be packed.

    The differences between normal packaged goods and intermediate bulk containers are explained and described according to the accepted codes of practice.

  • Anyone assessing a learner must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or an ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
