PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to describe the components of prefabricated aluminium alloy scaffolding. They will be able to assemble and dismantle prefabricated aluminium alloy scaffolding in a safe and efficient way at a work site. It will also enable learners to move the prefabricated aluminium alloy scaffolding when necessary and to understand that safety must be an overriding concern for their own and others safety for the duration of the erection, dismantling and moving phases.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing prefabricated aluminium alloy scaffolding and scaffolding components.
  • Preparing to erect prefabricated aluminium alloy scaffolding.
  • Erecting prefabricated aluminium alloy scaffolding.
  • Dismantling and storing scaffolding.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at ABET Level 3 or equivalent.

    Different types of scaffolding towers and components are identified by name, height and size.

    The uses of scaffolding are explained in order to establish scaffolding limitations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Damaged scaffolding components are identified for safety reasons. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reasons why damaged scaffolding components must not be used are explained with examples of the consequences of using them.

    The consequences of overloading a scaffold are explained with examples of the consequences. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare to erect prefabricated aluminium alloy scaffolding.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Types of hazards are identified and explained in order to prevent accidents and/or injury. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Hazards include but are not limited to: weather conditions, overhead electrical cables, ground condition, ground level and slope, vehicle and public traffic conditions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Hazards are reported in accordance with organisational procedures.

    Scaffolding components required for the task are identified and selected and ready for use at the work area.

    Personal protective equipment required for the task is identified and selected and made ready for use at the work area.

    Shortages and damaged materials are reported to inform safety procedures.

    Health and safety requirements are adhered to in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Erect prefabricated aluminium alloy scaffolding.

    Prefabricated scaffolding components are used according manufactures/suppliers specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Prefabricated scaffolding components are placed vertically and level. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The erected scaffolding is braced to ensure firmness and stability during work activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The erected scaffolding is tied into the structure according to South African National Standard requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The erected scaffold is checked after completion to ensure safety in accordance with health and safety regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Health and safety requirements during the erection process are adhered to in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

    Dismantle and store scaffolding.

    The scaffolding is dismantled without risk of damage to the structure, components and materials.

    The scaffolding is dismantled without risk of injury to self and to other people.

    Damaged components are identified, set aside and reported in accordance with organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Materials and components are stored in a required safe place while awaiting removal in accordance with organisational standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Health and safety requirements during the dismantling process are adhered to in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
