PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard forms part of the qualification National Certificate: Piano Restoration, NQF Level 2. This Unit Standard will serve to introduce the learner to the Piano Industry. It will equip the learner with a basic understanding of the historical development of the modern acoustic piano (Grand Piano or Upright Piano). Furthermore, a basic knowledge of the various types of pianos and their parts will be gleaned. The foundational knowledge of the materials and tools used to restore and repair modern acoustic pianos is also covered in this Unit Standard.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Describing the historical development of the modern acoustic piano.
  • Defining industry terms and describing types of acoustic pianos.
  • Explaining the functions of the parts of the acoustic piano.
  • Identifying the materials used to restore and repair acoustic pianos.

    The development of the modern acoustic piano is briefly described as presented by the South African Association for Piano Tuners. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The categories of classical musical instruments are identified with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Categories of classical musical instruments include, but is not limited to: percussion, woodwind, and string.

    Define industry terms and describe types of acoustic pianos.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Common industry terms are defined according the South African piano industry. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Terms include, but is not limited to: chronology, chipping, note, pitch, tone, acoustics, action, interval, etc.

    Grand pianos are identified using examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Grand pianos includes, but is not limited to: simplex, roller action.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Upright pianos are identified using examples.

    Upright pianos includes, but is not limited to: over damper, under damper, drop action, over strung, straight strung.

    Distinguish between wooden and caste-iron framed pianos using examples.

    The function of the internal and external parts of an upright piano is explained as outlined by the South African Association for Piano Tuners.

    Identify the materials and tools used to restore and repair acoustic pianos.

    The types of finishes used on modern acoustic pianos is described according to the piano industry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The materials used for parts of the acoustic piano are identified according to the piano industry.

    Materials includes, but is not limited to: wood, metal, felt, leather, plastic and ivory.

    Piano tools are identified using the Piano industry terms.

    Woodworking tools commonly used are identified using the Piano industry terms.
