PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard forms part of the qualification National Certificate: Piano Restoration NQF Level 2. This Unit Standard will equip the learner with the basic knowledge and skills to care for the client's acoustic piano (Grand piano or Upright piano) throughout the process of repairing and restoring the instrument. This process will include the transportation, packaging, storing, and cleaning of the instrument. While these aspects of the repair and restore process are not central to the service, they add value to the overall service. These competencies relate to entry-level functions within the piano industry in South Africa.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Assisting to transport the acoustic piano.
  • Storing and packing the acoustic piano.
  • Cleaning and polishing the acoustic piano.

    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF level 1 or equivalent.

    Assist in transporting the acoustic piano.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The transport options for moving the acoustic piano is described as is practiced in the piano industry. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Transport options include, but are not limited to: motor vehicles, crane, hyster, manually etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The transport option is selected in relation to the circumstances of the move of the acoustic piano according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The resources and equipment to load and offload the acoustic piano is described as is practiced in the piano industry. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Resources and equipment includes, but is not limited to: protective packaging, ropes, harnesses, blankets, hyster, human resources etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Load and offload the acoustic piano in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and organisational requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Store and pack the acoustic piano.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The required conditions for the storage of the acoustic piano is described according to manufacturer's instructions and standard practice in the piano industry. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Conditions to avoid includes, but is not limited to: dusty, damp, direct sunlight etc.

    The materials used to protect and pack the acoustic piano is described according to organisational requirements.

    The administrative process for moving the acoustic piano is completed according to the organisational processes and procedures.

    Steps in the administrative process includes, but is not limited to: collection, delivery, workshop, storage etc.

    Cleaning and polishing methods are demonstrated according to organisational requirements.

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
