PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to equip learners with the basic knowledge and skills to perform as a disc jockey. This includes the ability to operate the requisite equipment and demonstrate the basic techniques for a basic disc jockey performance.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Understanding the historical development of disc jockey music and styles.
  • Operating and connecting Disk Jockey equipment.
  • Understanding the ear and basic acoustic principles.
  • Learning to operate and connect turntable and CD players.
  • Demonstrating disc jockey techniques.

    Backtracking mechanism are recognised and applied using turntable according to standard practice.

    Basic techniques and methods cueing and catching the first beat is practiced as per industry practice.

    Controls of the turntable and/or compact disk player are operated according to manufacturers' instructions.

    Bars and beats are juggled to specific dance music as per provider specifications.

    Scratching technique is demonstrated to suit specific dance music as per specified instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
    . Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of level 3 qualification in the music field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this US or assessing this US, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.
