PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable qualifying learners to create and manipulate music for use in various contexts.

This unit standard will contribute to the development of the learner within the music field by providing recognition, mobility and portability within the various sub-fields of economic activity in the music industry. The skills, knowledge and attitudes embedded within this unit standard are essential for creating a solid foundation to function in the field of music.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Composing a song.
  • Applying chords over a melody of a short song.
  • Constructing and applying chord progressions.
  • Analysing various music styles.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Compose a song. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Twelve bar blues songs/works are composed according to industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Twenty four bar songs are composed in different styles demonstrating knowledge of drum patterns, form, typical lyrics, instrumentation, typical artists, and composer by using appropriate compositional techniques according to provider specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Anticipation, delayed attack, inversion, call & response and chromatic & diatonic passing tones are used in short fragments of music according to industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Lyrics are written demonstrating use of basic tools of meter, rhythm, phonetics, phrasing, structure, hook, chorus, verse, bridge, dynamics and vowels according to provider specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply chords over a melody of a short song.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Common diatonic chord progressions are explained according to industry standard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Suitable cadential patterns are used at cadence points in the music. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate chords are added to a given melody. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Apply further cadences and common diatonic chord progressions over the short song composed. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Construct and apply chord progressions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Chords for a 32 bar "rhythm changes" song are explained and applied. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Chord progression of a song is analysed and transposed to any given key as required by the scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A 32 bar "rhythm changes" chord progression is written in a major key. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Basic blues and minor blues progressions are written. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Melodies are written for blues progressions using the Blues scale and melodic forms for the blues. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Analyse various musical styles.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Three international styles and one South African Music style are analysed and explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Styles includes, but is not limited to: Swing, Be-Bop, Cool Jazz and one South African style e.g. township jazz.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Origin of the styles listed above are researched and noted. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Two artists per style are researched and noted according to provider's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Instrumentation and great works of the styles are chosen and listed.

    Instrumentation include, but not limited to: audio and visual aids.

  • Any individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of level 4 qualification in the sub-field of music.
