The learner studying towards achieving this unit standard will develop intermediate practical instrument ability (see supplementary information) which includes the voice as an instrument.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:

  • Demonstrating technical skills on the chosen instrument.
  • Performing on chosen instrument.
  • Sight reading and playing on chosen instrument.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Intermediate warm up exercises are conducted in relation to the chosen musical instrument.

    Position of notes on chosen instrument is identified according to standard industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Intermediate scales for melodic instruments or intermediate rudiments for un-tuned percussion instruments are played according to standard industry practice.

    Intermediate technical exercises are played according to standard industry practice.

    Intermediate chords/broken chords are demonstrated for melodic instruments or intermediate grooves for un-tuned percussion instruments.

    Perform on chosen instrument.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An intermediate music piece is performed unaccompanied according to standard music industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Three intermediate music pieces differing in genre are performed with accompaniment according to standard music industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Suitable rhythm and phrasing are applied to the specific pieces according to the genre. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Suitable tempo is applied to the specific pieces according to the genre. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Performance indicators/form is adhered to in the selected pieces. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Sight read and play on chosen instrument. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An excerpt of no less than eight bars is played from sight. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Time signature is observed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Time signatures include, but is not limited to: 2/4, ¾, 4/4 and 6/8.

    Key signature is observed.

    Keys include, but are not limited to: C, G, F, D and Bb Major and their relative minors.

  • Any individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of level 4 qualification in the sub-field of music.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessment of this Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.
