PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to understand the theory and aural elements of music in order to improve speed to programme music. It will ensure that qualifying learners will be able to demonstrate keyboard skills at the intermediate level of difficulty (See supplementary information).

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Applying fundamental keyboard technique.
  • Demonstrating basic sight reading skills.
  • Recognising and demonstrating different styles of music for the keyboard.
  • Describing and analysing different music pieces.

    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Language and Communication at NQF level 2 or equivalent competence.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Apply fundamental keyboard technique. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Major and natural minor scales are played with hands together, one octave up and down, according to industry standard. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Scales include, but not limited to the keys of C, G and D.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Major, minor, triad chords and chord exercises are played according to industry standard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Basic level finger exercises emphasizing correct finger numbering is conducted according to industry standard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Exercises using hand together or apart is demonstrated according provider's specification. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate basic sight reading skills.

    Note values and pitches are recognised, read and demonstrated according to industry standard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A piece of music is interpreted and reproduced within a specified time frame. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Music pieces, include but is not limited to: a four bar piece of music given during the assessment and studied for one minute.

    A melodic piece is read and performed according to provider specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The above musical piece is played rhythmically accurate according to music industry standard. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Recognise and demonstrate different styles of music for the keyboard.

    Three different genre music pieces are chosen, applied and demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stylistically correct rhythm is expressed in the demonstration of the specific piece according to the genre as per industry standard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Stylistically correct form is expressed in the demonstration of the specific piece according to the genre as per industry standard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stylistically correct comping is expressed in the demonstration of the specific piece according to the genre as per industry standard.

    Describe and analyse three different music pieces.

  • Any individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of level 4 qualification in the sub-field of music.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessment of this Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.
