PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to equip learners with the knowledge and skills to perform as a disc jockey. This includes the ability to operate the requisite equipment and demonstrate the techniques for a successful basic disc jockey performance.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Understanding the development of disc jockey music and genres.
  • Operating disc jockey equipment
  • Operating turntable and Compact Disc players.
  • Demonstrating advanced disc jockey techniques.

    Current practitioners of disc jockeying are researched and how they evolved according to organisational records. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Identified disc jockeys and their contributions to the development of disc jockeying are described as per organisational sources. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Arrangement of disc jockey music is described as per provider specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Advanced styles and structure of disk jockey music is defined as per provider specification.

    Operate disc jockey equipment.

    Disc Jockey sound equipment is connected according to manufacturer's instructions.

    Technical trouble-shooting skills are demonstrated according to organisational processes and procedures.

    Sound wave and responses are explained in relation to their application to disc jockeying.

    Housekeeping rules are maintained according to local and international disc jockeying practice.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Advanced backtracking technique is recognised and applied using a turntable. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The use of slip mat is applied on turntable as per specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Advanced techniques and methods of cueing and catching the first beat are applied as per industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Controls of the turntable and/or compact disc player are fully operated according to manufacturers' instructions.

    Demonstrate advanced disk jockey techniques.

    Advanced sampling techniques are practised and demonstrated according to industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Proficient use of control pitch is ensured and used to pace tracks according to desired speed as per industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Set lists to suit a gig are compiled and demonstrated according to provider requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Advanced scratching to suit specific dance music is demonstrated according to provider specifications. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of level 4 qualification in the sub-field of music.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessment of this Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.
