PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable qualifying learners to demonstrate an understanding of the embalming process and other more specialised preservation techniques and their application in the working environment of a mortuary facility or laboratory. Learners will be able to the use preservation processes pertaining to cadaveric material and will also be able to understand and use preservation techniques when handling and storing cadaveric material.

The qualifying learner will be able to:
  • Explain the processes involved in the preservation of cadaveric material.
  • Perform specialised preservation techniques. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication NQF Level 4 or equivalent.
  • Biology at NQF Level 4.
  • Physical Science at NQF Level 4. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The context of this unit standard refers to laboratory facility or the mortuary facility itself for appropriate practical application.
  • Given situation refers to but is not limited to structured scenarios, case studies and actual or simulated scenarios.

    The functioning of the equipment in the preparation room is assessed prior to procedure being performed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The preparation of the embalming fluid is demonstrated in a given situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Principle areas of injection of embalming fluid are identified and located topographically. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Cannulation and injection techniques are demonstrated? as a means of preserving the body. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The injection process is assessed to determine the success of the preservation technique. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Methods of disposing of embalming waste are assessed in terms of their advantages and disadvantages.

    Perform specialised preservation techniques.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Processes involved in the plastination procedure and the preparation of resin casts are explained according to when and how they should be used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Requirements for each process are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Specialised preservation techniques are applied in a given situation.
