PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is specifically for learners in the Footwear Manufacturing formal sector working in, or who wish to work in the Making department of a footwear factory.

Learners assessed as competent against this standard will be capable of:
  • Identifying all the operations in Making processes to last and attach uppers to bottoms.
  • Select machinery, equipment and consumables used in Making operations.
  • Preparing consumables, machinery and equipment for Making operations.
  • Performing hand, and basic and specialised machine operations in the Making processes.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard is applicable to manufacturing processes within the Footwear industry.

    Making processes may include, but are not limited to:
  • Flat lasted.
  • Welted.
  • Stuck-on.
  • Force lasted.
  • Stitchdown.
  • Injection moulded.

    The standard covers the manufacturing operations relating to the lasting of uppers and attaching of bottoms, but is not limited to:
  • Specific material and component combinations within construction categories.
  • Specific consumables.
  • Specific operation sequences.
  • Specific production processes.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify all the operations that are necessary in Making processes to last and attach uppers to bottoms.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The type of materials and construction requirements of a specific job are described in terms of specification requirements and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All Making operations required to last and attach the uppers to the bottoms of a selected style are listed and described in terms of standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify and select machinery, equipment and consumables used in Making operations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Machinery, equipment and consumables used in making processes are listed and described in terms of relevant work ticket specification requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose of identified machinery and equipment used in making processes is listed and described in terms of machinery manufacturer specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare consumables, machinery and equipment for Making operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Consumables are prepared for making operations as required for production processes according to standard operating procedures in the work place. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Selected machinery and equipment for making processes is set up in accordance with manufacturers specifications and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ancillary tools and equipment are prepared for making processes as required in terms of job specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform hand, basic machine and specialised machine operations in the Making processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hand and machine operations in the Making processes are selected and performed in compliance with the requirements of the work ticket and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Conformance of performed operations to standard operating procedures and quality standards is verified in terms of customer specification requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the ETQA.
  • Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA must conduct moderation. All external moderation will be conducted at the discretion of the relative ETQA.
