PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is specifically for learners in the Footwear Manufacturing formal sector working in, or who wish to work in the Finishing or Shoe Room Departments of a footwear factory. Learners assessed as competent against this standard will be capable of:
  • Identifying all necessary operations that are necessary in finishing and dressing processes to complete selected footwear.
  • Identify and select machinery, equipment and consumables used in the finishing and dressing operations.
  • Prepare consumables, machinery and equipment for finishing and dressing processes.
  • Perform hand, basic machine and specialised machine operations in the finishing or dressing processes. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard is applicable to manufacturing processes within the Footwear industry.

    Finishing and shoe room processes relating to different footwear construction types may include, but are not limited to:
  • Inspection.
  • Cleaning.
  • Repairing.
  • Socking.
  • Wrinkle chasing.
  • Dressing.
  • Sole embossing.
  • Quarter reforming.
  • Examining.
  • Labelling.
  • Boxing.

    The standard covers the manufacturing operations relating to the finishing and dressing of uppers and bottoms of footwear, but is not limited to:
  • Specific material and component combinations within construction categories.
  • Specific consumables.
  • Specific operation sequences.
  • specific production processes.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify all the operations that are necessary in Finishing and Dressing processes to complete the selected footwear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The type of upper and bottom materials and aesthetic requirements of a specific job are described in terms of customer requirements and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All Finishing and Dressing operations required to complete a selected style according to job specifications are listed and described in terms of standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify and select machinery, equipment and consumables used in the finishing and dressing operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Consumables used in finishing and dressing processes for the job are identified and their purpose described in terms of relevant work ticket specification requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Machinery and equipment used for finishing and dressing processes is identified and their purpose described in terms of machinery manufacturer and work ticket specification. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare consumables, machinery and equipment for finishing and dressing processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Consumables are prepared for finishing and dressing operations as required for production processes according to standard operating procedures In the work place. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Selected machinery and equipment for finishing and dressing processes is set up in accordance with manufacturers specifications and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ancillary tools and equipment are prepared for finishing and dressing processes as required in terms of job specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform hand, basic machine and specialised machine operations in the finishing or dressing processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hand and machine operations in the finishing and dressing processes are selected and performed, in compliance with the requirements of the work ticket. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Conformance of performed operations to standard operating procedures and quality standards is verified in terms of customer specification requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the ETQA.
  • Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA must conduct moderation.
  • All external moderation will be conducted at the discretion of the relative ETQA.

  • Relevant health, safety and environmental policies and procedures.
