PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is specifically for learners in the Footwear and General Goods Manufacturing formal sector working in, or who wish to work in the Sewing department of a relevant factory. Learners assessed as competent against this standard will be capable of:
  • Identifying all necessary operations to assemble and join cut component parts.
  • Selecting machinery, equipment and consumables to assemble and join cut parts.
  • Performing hand, basic machine and specialised machine operations to assemble and join cut component parts. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard is applicable to manufacturing processes within the Footwear and General Goods sectors.

    Operations may include, but are not limited to:
  • Processing of leather component parts by hand or machine.
  • Processing of synthetic material component parts.
  • Processing of textile component parts.
  • Processing of board parts.
  • Processing of reinforcements.

    The standard covers the joining of the component parts of, but not limited to, the following basic products:
  • Leather and synthetic footwear of differing types.
  • Handbags, carrier bags.
  • Belts.
  • Hats.
  • Luggage.
  • Wallets and purses.
  • Satchels.
  • Upholstery.

    Prepare consumables, machinery and equipment to assemble and join cut component parts.

    Specified consumables and component parts are prepared for production process according to standard operating procedures.

    Selected machinery for processing specific components is set up in accordance with manufacturers specifications and standard operating procedures.

    Ancillary tools and equipment are prepared for production processes as required in terms of job specifications.

    Perform hand, basic machine and specialised machine operations to assemble and join cut component parts.

    Hand and machine operations to assemble and join cut component parts are selected and performed, in compliance with the requirements of the work ticket. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Conformance of performed operations to standard operating procedures and quality standards is verified in terms of customer specification requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
