PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence against this standard will be able to maintain machines and equipment used in leather manufacturing processes through cleaning and lubricating machines, identifying and reporting warning signs and using appropriate hand tools.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Applying and reading finishing procedures.
  • Setting up finishing machines.
  • Implementing correct application methods.
  • Applying process quality awareness of process faults.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification or equivalent at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Applies to chrome, chrome free and vegetable processes.
  • The processes in finishing include:

    > Sorting.
    > Pre-finishing operations.
    > Conditioning.
    > Dry milling.
    > Staking.
    > De-dusting.
    > Finishing operations:

    > Spraying.
    > Curtain coating.
    > Roller coating.
    > Embossing/smooth plating.
    > Lab testing.
    > Measuring.
    > Weighing.
  • The machines and equipment used in pre-finishing and finishing will include:

    > Drums.
    > Staking machines.
    > Mixing machines.
    > Spraying machines including drying tunnels and spray booths.
    > Curtain coating machines.
    > Roller coating machines.
    > Embossing machines.
    > Conditioning spraying machines.
    > Staking machines.
    > De-dusting machines.
    > Lab equipment.
    > Measuring machines.
    > Scales.
  • The chemicals and materials used in finishing will include:

    > Water.
    > Resins and binders - acrylics, polyurethanes, etc.
    > Colouring agents - dyes and pigments.
    > Top coats and sealants - polyurethanes, nitrocellulose, etc.
    > Feel agents and modifiers - waxes, silicones, etc.
    > Solvents and thinners.

    Finishing machines are set according to manufacturers and process specifications.

    Appropriate settings are checked in accordance with work instructions and job cards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Any faults to finishing machines are reported to appropriate personnel and any adjustments to settings are implemented in accordance with standard reporting procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Implement correct application methods.

    Machines are loaded correctly and according to set specifications or recipes.

    Raw materials are stacked correctly into machines according to manufacturers and supplier specifications.

    Warning signs are noted and actioned promptly according to laid down safety legislation and procedures.

    Faults during processes are reported and rectified according standard reporting and company policies and procedures.

    End product quality is ascertained and reported for corrective action in accordance with standard industry procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
