PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence against this standard will be able to administer the leather manufacturing process through recording manually or using computers, administering reporting and filing procedures, retrieving relevant information, ordering documentation and requisitions and distributing documentation to relevant personnel.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Applying start-up procedures.
  • Applying preparation procedures.
  • Applying loading procedures.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification or equivalent at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The processes of curing include:

    > Stack salting.
    > Raceway brine curing (agitating).
    > Drum salting.
    > Drum icing/ice packing in chilling.
    > Antiseptic drumming - chemical curing/STP.
    > Antiseptic spraying - chemical curing/STP.
    > Antiseptic dipping - chemical curing/STP.
    > Drying (sun or shade) and/or salted.
  • The machines and equipment used in curing will include:

    > Spray equipment.
    > Raceway system.
    > Tank (dip).
    > Chiller/coldroom.
    > Process drums, mixer.
    > Scale.
    > Lab equipment.
  • The chemicals and materials used in curing will include:

    > Water.
    > Ice.
    > Acids.
    > Air/cold air.
    > Alkalis.
    > Salts (neutral).
    > Antiseptics/biocides.
    > All hide and skin types.

    Hide and skin types are identified according to curing state and source.

    Hide and skin types are sorted into weight ranges in accordance with company production plans. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hide and skin conditions are assessed, reported and recorded in accordance with specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Relevant process sheets are obtained and implemented in compliance with specified company methodologies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Chemicals including salts and antiseptics are pre-mixed as required according to work instructions and job cards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Products are pre-treated as per process requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    "Green" hide mass is determined where applicable in accordance with product specifications.

    Hides and skins are loaded into drums for the curing processes in accordance with specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Hides and skins are loaded for stacking processes where applicable and in accordance with specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hides and skins are loaded for raceway processes where applicable and in accordance with required specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hides and skins are loaded for spraying processes where applicable and in accordance with required specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Chemicals are added as per process specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Record sheets are completed accurately and timorously where standard company policies and procedures are applied. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA must conduct moderation. All external moderation will be conducted at the discretion of the relative ETQA.
