PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will equip learners with the skills, knowledge and values to participate effectively in workplace activities within the CTFL manufacturing industries, specifically in the Clothing industry. This unit standard will enable the learner to perform outwork processes and complete all the preparation and operations related thereto in line with safety standards.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Preparing materials, machines, equipment and tools for outwork processes.
  • Operating machines and equipment, monitoring and maintaining methods, quality standards and output targets.
  • Applying safety standards when operating machines and equipment and performing basic maintenance when undertaking outwork processes.
  • Inspecting and disposing of completed products or parts and completing administrative documentation. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1.

    Learners must be able to:
  • Speak, read and write in English.
  • Do basic mathematic calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and the calculation of areas, volumes and quantities. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This standard applies to the clothing sector:
  • Outwork processes shall include, but not limited to embroidery, panel printing, embossing, pleating, belting, garment washing and dyeing.
  • The number of machines/equipment/processes on which a learner will be assessed will be all processes used to complete a specific range of outwork processes. (For example, in a laundry, this may include various washing processes, extracting, and tumble drying; in pleating, this may include pleating using a range of cardboard pleating templates and operating pleating machines).
  • Basic maintenance and machine set up functions shall include, functions normally considered to be within the scope of the machine operator, but exclude those where a qualified mechanic should be utilized.
  • The correct method and time and quality standards for preparing machines, equipment and tools used in outwork processes must be applied, as determined by company and recognised industry standards.
  • The correct method and time and quality standards for specific outwork operations must be applied, as determined by company and recognised industry standards.
  • An efficiency level of 80% for each specified outwork operation must be achieved and maintained for one week.
  • Fabric types can include wovens, non-wovens and knits.

    Appropriate equipment and tools are identified and selected according to the quality and method requirements of specified outwork processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Order details and product specifications are identified and selected according to customer requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Relevant materials and consumables are identified, selected and prepared according to required quality, method and time standards for the specific outwork process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Machines, equipment and tools are identified, selected and prepared according to required quality, method and time standards for the specific outwork process. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Operate machines and equipment, monitor and maintain methods, quality standards and output targets.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All manual and machine related tasks required to complete outwork process are conducted according to method, quality and time standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Conditions are monitored and tests carried out at agreed intervals to assess quality standards against specifications in accordance with company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Machine, equipment and process faults are identified and rectified according to company procedures and required quality standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Faults beyond own scope of authority or capability are identified and reported according to company reporting procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Apply safety standards when operating machines and equipment used for outwork processes and perform basic maintenance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Correct safety procedures are demonstrated when operating and controlling machines, equipment and tools used for outwork processes according to equipment specifications and company safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Workplace Health and Safety Rules and procedures are described and adhered to according to company health and safety policies and procedures and safety legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Machines, equipment and tools are cleaned regularly according to relevant equipment manuals and standard practice. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Inspect and dispose of completed products or parts and complete administrative documentation.

    Faults are identified and rectified using appropriate methods and tools according to customer quality standards.

    Products are disposed of and stored according to correct method, quality and time standards.

    Documentation is completed and output recorded according to company systems and procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.

    Moderators qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA must conduct moderation.

    All external moderation will be conducted at the discretion of the relative ETQA.
