Learners assessed as competent against this standard will be capable of:
  • Preparing colouration laboratory equipment and material.
  • Mixing dyes, chemicals and print pastes to a recipe.
  • Producing laboratory samples to confirm to recipes.
  • Producing bulk mixings.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
This Unit Standard is applicable to manufacturing processes within the Textile sector.

Operations may include, but are not limited to:
  • manual and automatic dispensing and mixing on a variety of substrates.
  • dyeing and/or printing colouration.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Prepare colouration laboratory equipment and material.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Standard laboratory and/or colouration equipment is selected in accordance with relevant recipes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Functionality, cleanliness and accuracy of colouration is ensured as well as ancillary equipment to standard laboratory practices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Relevant process recipes/specifications are obtained and confirmed according to standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Substrate fibre contents and characteristics are determined and recorded according to standard operating procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Mix dyes, chemicals and print pastes to a recipe.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Dyes and chemicals are selected to conform with process instructions and Company standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Selected dyes, chemicals and print pastes are dispensed, weighed and recorded in order to conform with the recipe instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Solutions are mixed in accordance with mixing procedures and time factors to produce correctly dissolved Colouration mediums.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Standard tests are carried out in order to confirm colour, pH value, viscosity and specific gravity results.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Produce laboratory samples to confirm to recipes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Sample substrate material are selected and prepared for the selected colouration process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Sample colouration and finishing processes are carried out using sample colouration equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Tests are carried out in order to confirm colouration and finishing results of prepared samples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Any necessary modifications are implemented in order to recipes and confirm final Colouration process results.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Produce bulk mixings.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Bulk amounts of mixings are calculated based on substrate parameters, process operations and volume of substrate.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Bulk amounts are selected, measured and mixed according to final recipe information.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Final colouration materials are delivered in order to process area and record amounts used and returned wastage figures.
