PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will equip learners with the skills, knowledge and values to participate effectively in workplace activities within the CTFL manufacturing industries, specifically in the Clothing industry. This unit standard will provide the learner with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively press and dispatch garments.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Selecting and preparing equipment and finished garments for pressing and performing a range of pressing operations.
  • Inspecting and disposing of finished garments and completing administrative documentation.
  • Identifying and preparing finished garments and equipment for despatching operations.
  • Performing a range of despatching operations according to specified method, quality and time standards.
  • Apply safety standards when operating pressing and despatching equipment and tools and perform basic maintenance. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1.

    Learners must be able to:
  • Speak, read and write in English.
  • Do basic mathematic calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and the calculation of areas, volumes and quantities. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This standard applies to the Clothing sector:
  • Final pressing equipment that a learner will be assessed on will include a hand iron and a buck press, (legger, topper or other), carousel, blower or vapour press.
  • Equipment used for despatching operations may include folding, bagging, strapping machines, kimble guns.
  • Despatching operations shall include all operations (tagging, folding, bagging, sorting, picking and packing) required to despatch one garment type.
  • Pressing operations will include:
    > one final pressing operation using a hand steam iron.
    > wo final pressing operations using a buck press.
    > one final pressing operation using specialised pressing equipment.
  • Basic maintenance and machine set up functions shall include, but not limited to cleaning, checking steam and pressure settings, monitoring electrical cords and connections etc.
  • The correct method and time and quality standards for pressing and despatching finished garments must be applied, as determined by company and recognised industry standards.
  • An efficiency level of 80% for each of the four pressing operations and despatching operations must be achieved and maintained for one week.
  • The efficiency level of 80% may be reduced to 65% in companies producing fashion garments with repeated style changes.
  • Garment types can be any outer or underwear garment.
  • Fabric types can include wovens, non-wovens and knits.

    Select and prepare equipment and finished garments for pressing and perform a range of pressing operations.

    Appropriate pressing equipment is identified and selected according to the quality and method requirements of specified pressing operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Temperature and pressure control on pressing equipment are set according to fabric type, pressing operation and quality standards required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Finished garments are prepared and laid out according to specific methods and quality standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Finished garments are pressed using appropriate pressing equipment according to specific method, quality and time standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Inspect and dispose of finished garments and complete administrative documentation.

    Faults are identified and rectified using appropriate methods and tools according to customer quality standards.

    Appropriate despatching equipment and tools are identified and selected according to the quality and method requirements of specified despatching operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Documentation required to tag, fold, bag, sort, pick and pack finished garments is identified and selected according to customer requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Finished garments, equipment and consumables for tagging, folding, bagging, sorting, picking and packing are prepared according to customer requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform a range of despatching operations according to specified method, quality and time standards.

    Garments are tagged using appropriate price tickets, stickers and/or swing tags and tools according to customer requirements.

    Garments are folded and/or bagged or boxed using correct tools according to customer requirements.

    Garments are sorted according to customer size and colour requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Garments are picked for packing according to customer requirements.

    Garments are packed and sealed in an appropriate container according to customer packing instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Packing slips and labelling are completed according to customer requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Documentation recording output is completed according to company procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Apply safety standards when operating pressing and despatching equipment and tools and perform basic maintenance.

    Correct safety procedures are demonstrated when operating pressing and despatching equipment according to equipment specifications and Company safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Workplace Health and Safety Rules and procedures are described and adhered to as determined by company health & safety policies and procedures and safety legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Machines and equipment are cleaned regularly according to relevant equipment manuals and standard company practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Faults are identified, basic maintenance is performed to rectify faults and major faults are reported according to relevant equipment manuals, standard company practice and reporting procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.
