PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended to help the learners achieve competence to identify, handle and store ceiling and partitioning products.

Qualifying learners should be competent to identify, handle and store products used for ceilings and partitioning, which will contribute towards the overall efficiency of their employer organisations and ensure that breakages and work stoppages are kept to a minimum.

This competence also advances a learner's personal expertise and employability in the construction sector and related fields, for example interior design and refurbishment.

    Identify components and explain their application in the installation of ceilings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Suspension components and their applications are identified and explained in the installation of ceilings. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components include galvanized angles, suspension wire, hanger straps and hanger brackets, angle cleats and suspension rods.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ceiling boards are identified in terms of their thickness and size and their application explained in the installation of ceilings. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of ceiling boards includes plasterboard (defined in terms of thickness and size) and the following ceiling tiles: gypsum vinyl, mineral fibre, Nutec, glass wool, wood fibre and metal pan.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Cornices are identified and their application explained in the installation of ceilings. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of cornices includes moulded plaster, wood mouldings, gypsum, polystyrene and fibrous cornices.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Grids used are identified and explained in the installation of ceilings and their application. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of grids includes exposed grids of 15 mm, 24 mm and 35 mm; trims including Shadow line wall angle, wall angles, plaster trim and ancillaries such as expansion joints, hold-down clips and wedges, screw-up grid (35 mm knurled) and direct-fixed wood and / or steel branding.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify components and explain their application in the installation of partitioning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Components used are identified in the installation of residential partitioning. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range includes boards (moisture- and fire-rated boards), plasters, jointing tape, drywall screws, tracks, corner beading, studs, doors, doorframes, acoustic barriers, cornices and skirting.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The application of components used are explained in the installation of residential partitioning. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range includes door and / or window frames, doors, skirting, cornices, plasters, jointing tape, drywall screws, tracks, corner beading, studs, boards, acoustic barriers and aluminium components such as termination channels, recess bases, recess heads, head- and wall channels.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Components used in the installation of commercial drywalls are identified in terms of their type and functions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    General de-mountable components include spacers, extension brackets, studs, boards, backed tracks, doors, 90° and 135° steel corners, tracks, round and square corners.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Commercial de-mountable components are identified in terms of their functions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Aluminium de-mountable components include batten strips, skirting, angle trims, termination channels and doorframes.
  • Glazing demountable components include double and single glazing sections, glazing beads and glazing gaskets.

    Identify and explain the generic components used in both ceiling and partitioning installation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Insulation materials are identified and their function and application correctly explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range includes acoustic rolls (rock wool, glass wool and polyester fibre) and acoustic batt (rock wool and glass wool).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Acoustic barriers are identified and their function and application explained correctly. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range includes polyester fibre acoustic rolls, acoustic compounds, acoustic batt and sound seal rubber.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Jointing tapes are identified and their function and application explained correctly. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range includes wire-scrim, fibre tape and paper tape.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The different types of plasters to be applied to ceilings and partitions are identified and their applications explained correctly. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range includes skimming plaster, levelling plaster and jointing plaster.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Ancillary products used in the ceiling and partitioning industry is identified and their applications explained correctly.

    The range includes locks, hinges and the following fixings: anchors, steel pop rivets, Pozidrive, Wafertex, drywall screws, shots and pins, clout nails, double sided tape and Velcro.

    A suitable on-site storage area is selected in the best area and of the required size and degree of security.

    The range of correct processes includes taking stack heights, protection of board edges, wooden support (bangalala) spacing and protection from water into account.

    Boards are stacked according to type and size. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Products are identified and sorted before storage.

    Store inventories are maintained according to company standards. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the Qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.
