PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner credited with this unit standard will be able to compile a pipeline operations notice which communicates to the relevant role players a detailed plan of expected product, volume and times of product movements, thereby ensuring the timeous, safe and continuous operation of a pipeline network that is transporting petroleum products.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare for the detailed planning of product movements through the pipeline network. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Computer systems are identified and logged on according to company requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Cycle-sheets are extracted/obtained according to company procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Documentation information is captured on cycle sheets according to procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Product amendments are updated on cycle-sheets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Product heads are obtained from relevant log sheets and compared with previous operations notice, to establish deviations from pipeline operations to apply required adjustments. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Plan a detailed schedule of product movements through the pipeline network.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Product heads are plotted/built on the detailed diagram/schedule tool. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Starting point of pipeline operations is determined correctly. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Start up time, the flow rate, and the supply and delivery client/depot, sequence of injection.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Detailed plan is drawn using the cycle sheets, drawing equipment/scheduling tool and performing calculations a detailed plan is drawn. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The information on the detailed plan is verified against customer orders. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Client identification, flow rates and slug labelling, calculations of: starting and stopping times, arrival of intermixtures at depots, product volumes, line displacements, etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Sub-standard conditions pertaining to the detailed planning of product movements through the pipeline network are identified, resolved and communicated to relevant role players timeously.

    Operations notice template is selected from software menu according to its use.

  • Operations notice refers to job instructions, which stipulate details related to product movements.
  • Detailed plan refers to a drawing that reflects the expected intake and delivery times and product movements through a pipeline for the present week.
  • Cycle refers to an allocated time period from Monday to Sunday.
  • Cycle sheet reflects the slug numbers allocated and volumes ordered by clients for a specific cycle.
  • Slug refers to a parcel or batch of product.
  • Slug number refers to a label allocated to a slug.
  • Product heads refers to the current positions of the starting points of different products in the flow direction of the pipeline.
  • Sub-standard refers to the deviation from specifications and/or standards.
