PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this Unit Standard is able to provide an explanation on the nature and theory of the working class and its impact on society at large. Learners will also be able to apply class theory in analysing and implementing strategies and activities in promoting the interests of the working class.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Explaining the foundations that underpin working class theories.
  • Describing working class history and struggle and how it impacts on the trade union movement.
  • Describing role and purpose of trade union organisations in advancing working class theory. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners assessing this Unit Standard will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • History 1800 to present - only those sections pertaining to labour, working class and struggle.
  • Role plays include but are not limited to labour service organisations, and other labour friendly, individual and social movements.

    Explain the foundations that underpin working class theories.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The definitions of working class theories are explained in terms of their relevance to the trade union movement. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principles and values may underpin working class theories such as Marxism, socialism, elitism, anarchism, revolutionary nationalism.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Working class theories are compared to other class theories to illustrate their positive impact on labour. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Countries where working class theories have been implemented are identified by highlighting successes and failures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Factors and situations that influence the development of working class theories are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Concepts related to working class theories are given with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Concepts include but are not limited to exploitation, oppression, capitalism, nationalism, class, race, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe working class history and struggle and how it impacts on the trade union movement.

    History includes SA history, world history. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The impact of working class struggle in history is described with examples of gains and setbacks. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Periods of struggle should be from the 1800 to present.
  • Three examples must be given including one South African, one Asian and one other international example.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Key historical events of the labour movement influencing social-political dispensations are given with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A key historical event is any event that has a significant impact on the working class and any social-political dispensation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Lessons are drawn from working class history and struggle to inform strategies of the trade union movement. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Describe the role and purpose of trade union organisations in advancing working class theory. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The type and purpose of the different trade union institutions are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The aims and objectives of different trade unions are assessed in terms of how they advance working class theories and practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    At least five trade unions should be given. Trade unions must be representative of the different trade union federations and independent trade unions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The aims and objectives of labour service organisations and social movements are assessed in terms of how they advance working class theories and practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Strategies that advance the interests of the working class are developed and suggestions made on how these can be applied.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
