PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to describe and operate a radar system. The learners will be able to use the radar system to aid in navigation and interpret the information evident on the radar to avoid a collision.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Setting-up radar equipment.
  • Using radar as an aid to navigation.
  • Using radar for collision avoidance.

    Learners accessing this unit standard will be assumed competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • This unit standard involves the skills and knowledge required to perform basic radar operation activities on all types of vessels under 24 meters.
  • Work must be carried out in accordance with the relevant maritime regulations.
  • Can demonstrate competence by oral examination, completion of approved education and training, written theoretical examination and assessment of evidence obtained from one or more of the following:
    > Approved in-service training.
    > Approved training ship.
    > Approved simulator training.
    > Approved laboratory equipment training.
  • This unit standard refers to the Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) (Fishing and Marine Motorman Qualifications) Regulations - 2006 and any amendments thereafter.
  • SAMSA's Code for South African Maritime Qualifications; Study matrices and syllabuses for fishing and marine motorman qualifications, Electronic Navigation Systems, Module 1 (Radar), any amendments or equivalent.

    The principles of radar are explained according to international definitions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The components of the radar installation are described with the aid of a diagram. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The radar controls are identified and the use explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Radar is switched on and set up according to manufacturer's instructions to obtain optimal picture. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Pre-operational checks are carried out in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Use radar as an aid to navigation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fixed targets are detected and identified by pointing them out on the screen. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Radar is used for navigation in confined and coastal waters using blind pilotage techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Information obtained from radar is interpreted and analysed taking into account the limitations of the equipment and prevailing circumstance and conditions.

    Use radar for collision avoidance.

    A plotter is used to obtain information about targets using radar.

    Collision risk is assessed according to prevailing conditions.

    The effect of altering course and speed is explained in relation to Regulation for Preventing Collisions at Sea.

    Information pertaining to the radar plot is communicated to authorised individuals.

    Application of collision regulations in restricted visibility is explained with examples.

    Information obtained from radar is interpreted and analysed taking into account the limitations of the equipment and prevailing circumstance and conditions.

    Timely action to avoid a close encounter or collision with other vessels is explained and demonstrated in accordance with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
