PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to prepare and maintain the equipment and vessel to pole fish.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing the equipment to pole fish.
  • Preparing the vessel to pole fish.
  • Maintaining equipment for pole fishing.

    Learners accessing this unit standard will be assumed competent in:
  • Communication at NQF level 1 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 1 or equivalent.

    This unit standard refers to the specific sectors of the seagoing fishing industry where pole fishing is part of the activities.

    Equipment is checked for serviceability in accordance with enterprise procedures.

    Worn or damaged equipment components are identified and reconditioned or replaced in accordance with organisation standards.

    Methods for disposing defective components are given in accordance with organisational procedures.

    Items that can damage equipment are identified and explained with examples.

    Importance of good housekeeping (storing and securing) equipment is explained in terms of good practice and of safe working practices.
