PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to communicate and demonstrate the location of and don lifejackets, show an appreciation of personal survival techniques and shipboard safety procedures, safety and emergency alarm signals and signs and are able to carry out simple instructions pertaining to safety.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Explaining elementary safety matters, safety information symbols and alarm signals.
  • Explaining actions appropriate to a shipboard emergency signal in accordance with assigned duties.
  • Explaining actions to be taken in accordance with established emergency procedures, in the event of encountering a fire on board a ship.
  • Explaining immediate actions to be taken on encountering an accident or other medical emergency.
  • Explaining the operation of fire, weather-tight and watertight doors. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will be assumed competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The context of this unit standard is the international convention on 'Standards of Training and Certification for Watchkeepers '78, as amended '95' (STCW Code) as incorporated into the Code of South African Maritime Qualifications (SAMSA's Familiarisation Code) and the minimum requirements laid down by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) with respect to all persons employed or engaged on a seagoing ship in terms of a safety induction course including but are not limited to shipboard communication, actions on encountering an accident or medical emergency, man overboard, fire prevention and response and mustering and recognition of alarm signals. This must be supported by on-board familiarisation training, which deals with making a seaman familiar with his or her safety duties on board his or her ship.
  • This unit standard refers to the Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) (Fishing and Marine Motorman Qualifications) Regulations - 2006 and any amendments thereafter.

    Explain elementary safety matters, safety information symbols and alarms signals.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Communication procedures are explained in accordance with established procedures, rules and regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Instructions concerning safety aboard ship are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The meaning of safety symbols are identified and explained with examples and in accordance with international requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Alarm signals are identified and the action required is explained and demonstrated practically. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Established emergency procedures to be followed are explained in accordance with the South African Maritime Safety Authority code on encountering an emergency. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain actions appropriate to a ship-board emergency signal in accordance with assigned duties. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Actions appropriate to ship-board emergency signal may include but is not limited to muster lists, embarkation stations and emergency duties, personal protective equipment and clothing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Muster lists; embarkation stations and emergency duties are identified and explained according to shipboard emergency procedures.

    Types of shipboard emergencies are identified and explained with examples.

    Shipboard emergency will include but are not limited to:
  • Man overboard, fire or ship abandonment situation.

    Action to be taken in the event of a shipboard emergency is explained with examples.

    Clothing appropriate to the shipboard emergency situation is identified and their use is demonstrated practically. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Personal protective clothing requirements are explained in accordance with safety requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Personal Protective Clothing should include but is not limited to safety boots, gloves, hardhat and overalls.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Life saving aids is identified and their use is demonstrated in a practical scenario.

    Life saving aids include but are not limited to life jacket, life buoys, immersion suits and thermal protective aids.

    Explain actions to be taken on encountering an accident or other medical emergency.

    The consequences of not raising the alarm correctly are described.

    Casualties are identified and prioritised according to injury and or condition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Precautions to take for one's own safety when attending to a casualty are explained in accordance with safety practices and procedures.
