PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to identify and explain the tools and materials used for mending of nets. They are also able to mend nets using the tools and materials in the correct method.

The qualifying learners are capable of:

  • Explaining tools used in net mending.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of methods used in net mending.
  • Mending a damaged net.

    Explain materials used in net mending. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Materials used in net mending may include monofilament and multi monofilament netting, knotted and knotless netting, braided and twisted twine, polyethylene (PE), polyamide (nylon) (PA), and strengthening ropes.

    The uses of various net mending materials are described in terms of standard net mending practices.

    The use of net mending materials specific to various types of damage to netting is described in terms of standard net mending practices.

    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Tools may include netting needles (bone or flat), knives, scissors, measuring devices (marked rod, ruler, mesh gauge), stands, tensioning devices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Repair operations for various types of damage to netting are described in terms of standard net mending practices and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Repair operations may include those for holes, tears, patching, joining two panels (by sewing or lacing), use of additional strengthening ropes, use of different sized meshes, patching.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The various types of damage to nets are identified and described with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Mend a damaged net. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Starting points are identified and twine is secured to the netting in accordance with standard net mending practices and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Securing may be by double sheet bend or sheet bend with overhand knot.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Twine is used to tie knots that make meshes to resemble the original netting. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Knots may include double sheet bend, sheet bend tied horizontally and vertically, side knot, net maker's knot, two half hitches, rolling hitch or hanging knots, baiting knots, joining (fisherman's) knot, sewn with meshes horizontal or meshes vertical.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Twine is secured at the end of the repair in accordance with standard net mending practices and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Existing and replacement material for large scale damage to netting is joined using twine and knots to resemble the original netting. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Joining may be mesh to mesh, point to point, taper to taper, gathering meshes together.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Existing and replacement material for large scale damage to netting is joined using twine and lacing to resemble the original netting. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Lacing may involve temporary mending, two panels together, strengthening ropes.
