PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to prepare, turn out a horse and explain the routine procedures of a race. They will also be able to handle a horse in a parade ring and conduct a horse inspection before the race.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Feeding and watering a horse for a race day.
  • Turning out a horse for racing.
  • Explaining race day routines.
  • Handling a horse in a parade ring.
  • Conducting a post race inspection of the race horse. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners assessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at ABET Level 3 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The importance of the specialised feeding and watering routine on a race day as opposed to a normal day, including but not limited to: time of feeding, quantity reduced, early watering, limited watering at the course, use of different feeds, no hay or lucern.
  • Knowledge of the parade ring and the requirements including but not limited to: anti clockwise movement of horses in the parade ring, numerical order of horses.
  • Steps to inspect a race horse after the race including but not limited to: bleeding from nostrils, laceration on front and hind heels, hind tendon.

    Different feeding and watering patterns for race day are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A racehorse is fed and watered according to instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consequences of incorrect feeding and watering are explained using a given case study. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Turnout a horse for racing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Reasons for turning out a horse for a race day are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A horse mane and tail are prepared according to instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation of a horse mane and tail include but are not limited to pulling, plaiting and trimming.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Quarter marks are put on the race horse's hindquarters according to instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The horse's hooves are polished in accordance with worksite procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different areas of a racecourse are explained in order to establish restricted and non-restricted areas. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The different areas of a race course include but are not limited to parade ring, holding area, saddling area, weighing area.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Routines to be followed before and during the race are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Routines to be followed after the race are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Handle a horse in a parade ring. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Parade ring requirements are explained in order to ensure safety and public viewing. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Parade ring requirements include but are not limited to anti clockwise and numerical order.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The racehorse is led following internationally accepted techniques. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Horse-leading techniques include walking in the left, at the horses shoulders without tension in the lead rope.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Winners or place boxes etiquette are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A lead reign is attached to the bridle and the horse handed over to the winning connections according to instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Conduct a post race inspection of the race horse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of inspecting a racehorse for injury is explained in order to deal with injuries immediately. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Types of common injuries that might occur during a race are explained in given case studies. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Common injuries include but are not limited to bleeding from nostrils, cuts, grazes on front and hind legs and feet, heat in horses legs, eye injuries.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The racehorse is inspected by following a checklist. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Any injury is reported to trainer or assistant trainer according to instructions.
