PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The persons credited with this unit standard will be able to explain and apply safety procedures when working with horses. They will also be able to follow and carry out a variety of grooming procedures on a horse.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining and applying safety procedures when working with and around horses.
  • Handling a horse for grooming purposes.
  • Explaining and caring for the grooming kit.
  • Cleaning, bathing and grooming a horse.
  • Cleaning and caring for a horse's hooves.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain and apply safety procedures when working with and around horses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Personal Protective Clothing is worn according to worksite requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Personal Protective Clothing will include but not be limited to closed shoes or boots and a hard hat.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The safety procedures which are to be followed when working with and around horses are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not following safety procedures are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safety procedures are applied in accordance with worksite procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Handle a horse for grooming purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Methods for handling a horse are explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Horse handling will follow internationally accepted humane methods.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A halter, head collar and lead rope are identified and their uses explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Halters, head collars and lead rope will include those manufactured from leather, webbing, rope and nylon materials.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A horse is caught and secured using a halter, head collar and lead rope. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A horse is led following internationally accepted techniques. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Horse-leading techniques will include walking on left, at the horses shoulder, without tension in the lead rope.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A horse is tethered with the use of a quick release safety knot. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain and care for the grooming kit. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The contents of the grooming kit are identified and their uses explained with examples of each. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A list of the items of a standard grooming kit includes but are not limited to:
  • Body brush, dandy brush, water brush, hoof pick, rubber curry comb, metal curry comb, plastic curry comb, mane comb, sponge and stable rubber.

    All items of the grooming kit are cared for and cleaned in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Clean, bath and groom a horse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The horse is observed and evaluated to establish the type of cleaning required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The horse is inspected for parasites and injury and the presence of any reported to higher authority. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Parasites include ticks, bot eggs, lice, and mites.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correct grooming kit items are selected in terms of the grooming which is to be undertaken. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Grooming tools are used according to grooming techniques. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    All items of a standard grooming kit must be demonstrated.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Situations when a horse should not be bathed are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The horse is bathed using washing techniques and products according to internationally accepted techniques and manufacturers instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Techniques and products will include but not limited to bucket, hose, sponge, and using recommended products.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Clean and care for a horse's hooves. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Horses hooves include both the front and hind hooves.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The horse's hooves are lifted and inspected according to internationally accepted techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Any foot injuries are reported to higher authority according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The horse's hooves are cleaned and cared for using the appropriate tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reasons for applying hoof care products on horse's hooves are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Hoof care products are applied according to their humane cosmetic uses.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
