PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to explain and assemble training tack for racehorses and fit training tack for racehorses. The learner will also be able to explain and fit protective tack to a racehorse.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Explaining and assembling basic training and racing tack for race horses.
  • Fitting basic training and racing tack to race horses.
  • Explaining and fitting protective training and racing tack to a race horse.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain and assemble basic training and racing tack for race horses. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Bridle, saddle, girth, surc, stirrup, leathers and irons and martingale and breastplate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Items of basic training tack for races are identified and named by pointing them out. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Different bridles including but are not limited to citations, Australian Cheeker and ring bit.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A horse's training bridle is assembled according to instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The different types of training saddle are identified by pointing them out. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A training saddle is assembled according to supervisor's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of incorrect assembly of basic racing tack is explained using a given case study. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Worn or faulty basic racing tack is identified and reported to authorised individual. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The sequence of fitting basic training tack to a horse is explained with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Items of protective tack are identified and named by pointing them out.

    Protective tack includes but is not limited to protective numnah; saddle sponge and quarter sheet.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reasons for using protective tack are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Protective tack is fitted in accordance with instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of incorrectly fitting protective tack to a horse are explained in given case studies.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
