PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The persons credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate an understanding of and prepare a trained horse for lungeing. They will also be able to use terminology such as lunge rein, whip, and verbal commands during the lungeing process. They will be able to lunge a trained horse for exercise and take off and store the lungeing tack after its use.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing a trained horse for lungeing.
  • Explaining the use of lunge rein, whip and using verbal commands.
  • Conducting lungeing of a trained horse for exercise.
  • Removing and storing lungeing tack after use.

    Prepare a trained horse for lungeing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The function of lungeing a trained horse is described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Basic lungeing tack is named by pointing out each item and explaining its use. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Basic lungeing tack will include but is not limited to lungeing cavesson; lunge reins, brushing boots, lunge whip.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Basic lungeing tack is fitted to a trained horse according to international standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of not fitting basic lungeing tack according to industry practice are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The features of a lungeing area are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the use of lunge rein, whip and verbal commands.

    The positioning of the handler during lungeing is explained with examples.

    Conduct lungeing of a trained horse for exercise. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Protective clothing is selected and worn by a handler in accordance with health and safety requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Protective clothing may include but is not limited to protective closed shoes, gloves, hardhat.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A lungeing check is carried out before lungeing takes place. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Lungeing check includes but is not limited to tack, equipment, footing, area, weather conditions, horse behaviour and situations which may interfere with lungeing.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The methods and techniques of lungeing a trained horse in walk, trot and canter are explained with examples of each. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Candidates should show some evidence of practical experience and must lunge with use of voice aids, and lungeing equipment in the correct manner.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Lungeing is carried out using rein, whip, voice, tack and fittings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A trained horse is led and turned when in hand.

    Remove and store lungeing tack after use.

    A trained horse is secured in accordance with international standards before lungeing tack is removed.

    Lungeing tack is removed from the trained horse according to international standards.

    Lungeing tack is cleaned using correct materials.

    Lungeing tack is stored in accordance with organisations requirements.
