PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of repairing and assembling automotive components to restore the system to operational condition. This will contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in maintaining vehicles and related qualifications. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that the learner has already learned the use of engineering hand tools, power tools, workshop equipment, measuring equipment, measure and assess component parts for serviceability, use automobile lifting equipment and to maintain a safe and productive working environment and learners are already competent in Communication and Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2.

  • All work is performed with little or no supervision in accordance with operational, repair manual specifications and procedures and in compliance with occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan and prepare work area and component parts for assessment. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Planning includes reading and interpreting the job card/work instructions and obtaining service data.
  • Preparing includes selecting appropriate tools and equipment and cleaning component.
  • Appropriate tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment as being most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.
  • Components include but are not limited to engines, transmissions, torque converters, pumps, cylinders, cylinder heads, differentials, axles, and brake system components.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools and equipment are selected appropriate to the task required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Relevant service data is obtained in accordance with component make and model. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Component is cleaned according to company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of not adequately preparing are explained in terms of the potential safety hazard and lost production. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Measure and assess component parts and order replacement parts. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Assessing component parts includes a visual inspection for defects and measuring part dimensions.
  • Defects include cracks, wear, distortion, cavitations and aeration damage and nicks.
  • Measuring includes using micrometers, verniers, spring tester, straight edge and dial gauges.
  • Recording findings includes comparing specifications with assessment evidence and recommendations.

    The component parts are inspected for defects in accordance with workshop manual procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Component parts are measured in accordance with workshop manual procedures and guidelines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Defects are identified and their possible cause identified. Actions to prevent similar defects in future are described in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Replacement parts are ordered in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Work is conducted in accordance with all workshop manual safety warnings and required actions before, during and after component repair task. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The component, equipment and tools are treated with the necessary care and are not damaged. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The reasons for following a specific assessment procedure are explained. The consequences of not following the procedure are explained in terms of the impact on the process and potential damages. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Repair and assemble components. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Repair means replacing an unserviceable part or sub-component with a new, remanufactured or a serviceable used part or component. It excludes major machining operations but include minor operations such as honing.
  • Repair also means partial repairs to components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, etc, and their sub-components.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Component parts are prepared for repair and assembly in accordance with workshop manual procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Components are assembled according to workshop manual procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Component parts are lubricated with appropriate lubricants during assembly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reasons for following specific component assembly procedures are explained in terms of the prevention of damage to the parts. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply quality checks on assembled components. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Quality checks include post tests and/or checks to determine component operation and/or working condition.
  • Post tests and/or checks include any one or a combination of the following:
    > Operation of component - dynamic testing on test apparatus.
    > Working condition of component - turn freely by hand, measurements, adjustments and static pressure tests. Hazardous materials include oils, coolant, fuels and cleaning agents.

    The component is tested for operation and/or working condition in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Testing procedures are used appropriate to the test and component. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons for testing or checking a component after assembly are explained in terms of ensuring reliability in assembled components. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Apply safety procedures during component repair and assembly task.

  • Safety includes using personal protective equipment, adhering to workshop manual warnings and dispose of hazardous materials.
  • Hazardous materials include oils, coolant, fuels and cleaning agents.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The component is repaired and assembled without incident, accident, injury or damage to component, vehicle, equipment and tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All workshop manual safety warnings and required actions before, during and after vehicle component assembly and repair tasks are adhered to. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Applicable SHE procedures are followed during the vehicle component removal task. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Restore work area, complete and process documentation. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Restoring work area includes disposal of hazardous materials, tools and equipment packed away, work area cleaned.
  • Documentation includes completing job cards, check lists and reports.
