PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of identifying the various types of petrol and diesel fuel injection systems, and diagnosing and repairing system faults.

    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Available information includes customer complaints, job instructions, obtaining technical data, the identification and selection of tools and equipment and to identify the type of fuel injection system.

    Appropriate tools and equipment are obtained in accordance with the job instructions.

    The consequences of not using the correct technical data, tools and equipment are explained in terms of the impact on the job.

    Prepare the vehicle and connect the required test equipment.

  • Preparing the vehicle includes parking it in the demarcated area.
  • Test equipment includes pressure gauges, multimeters and manufacturers special equipment.

    Reasons why specific test equipment is used are given in terms of the required result and availability of equipment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Test, diagnose and repair fuel injection system faults. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Test and diagnose includes checking and testing fuel supply and return systems, system pressure, boost pressure, filters, coolers, fuel tanks and filler caps and throttle linkages.
  • System faults include hard starting, unstable idle, runs rough, injectors, sensors, timing, fuel contamination, excessive smoking and overheating.
  • Repair includes the replacement, repair and refurbishing of components and/or parts.

    Consequences of not repairing identified faults are explained in terms of the impact on the engine performance.
