PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this Unit Standard will understand emergency procedures and their roles during an emergency in a processing environment.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of emergencies.
  • Assess emergency conditions.
  • Explain initial response to emergencies.
  • React to emergency conditions. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against numeracy and literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The term "emergency" is defined as it relates to the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different types of emergencies are listed and explained according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Emergencies may include fire, flood, combustible vapour or toxic vapour emission, liquid spillage, uncontrolled release of chemical substance(s), explosion, injured person, major plant or service failure, control room equipment failure.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences and risks associated with the different types of emergencies are explained in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    High risk areas in own area of responsibility are identified and explained according to procedures.

    The plant's basic emergency plan is explained in accordance with procedures.

    The types of incidents, hazardous conditions or emergencies which should be reported are identified and described in terms of workplace procedures.

    Method of making alarm for each type of incident is explained as per procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Nature, location and scope of incident are verified as per workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Assessment of best course of action is explained in accordance with workplace procedures.

    Containment of spillages or emissions is explained in accordance with workplace procedures.

    Procedures to evacuate self and/or non-operational staff to assembly points or safe rooms are explained as per procedures.

    Role in assisting (under supervision) during abnormal shutdown or restarting the process is explained in accordance with workplace procedures.

    Appropriate first aid response to casualties are identified and explained within the context of the material safety data sheet (MSDS) directives.
