Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will understand and be able to discuss the properties and applications of solid materials in a processing environment.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Describe the different solid materials and the unique properties applicable to a processing environment.
  • Explain basic material selection considerations.
  • Describe metals used in a processing environment, their properties and typical process applications.
  • Describe polymers used in a processing environment, their properties and typical process applications.
  • Describe ceramics used in a processing environment, their properties and typical process applications.
  • Describe composites and organic materials used in a processing environment, their properties and typical process applications.

    The importance of process condition knowledge in the selection of materials is explained in accordance with specified requirements.

    Typical process applications for each of the material classifications are described in accordance with specified requirements.

    The concept of life-cycle-cost and the importance of using it in the selection of materials are discussed in terms of process applications.

    Different metals and alloys are identified and described in terms of their use in a processing environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Metals and alloys may include but are not limited to steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, aluminium, titanium, tungsten, speciality alloys.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Molecular structure of the different metals and alloys is discussed using scientific terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Key properties of the different metals and alloys are discussed as applicable to a processing environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The different forms in which metal products are produced are described in accordance with processing requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Forms may include but are not limited to sheet, plate, bar, profiles, forgings and castings.

    Methods used for joining metals are explained as applicable to a processing environment.

    Organic materials may include but are not limited to wood, cork, natural rubber and leather. Composites include concrete, fibre reinforced materials and multi-layered sandwich panels.
