PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to solve operating problems using relevant technologies in an industrial manufacturing environment.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Identify variables deviating from the normal operating standards.
  • Establish likely cause of the deviation experienced.
  • Implement corrective action.
  • Evaluate the impact of corrective action.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against mathematical literacy and literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The typical context of this unit standard includes any processing environment, for example chemical, minerals or beverage processing.

Range statements, which are applicable to the Unit Standard title, Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria are found beneath the applicable assessment criteria.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Identify variables deviating from the normal operating standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Operating conditions are monitored and recorded in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Deviations from operating specifications are identified in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Extent of deviation is determined and quantified in terms of the normal operating standards.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Quantifying deviations include amount of change and rates of change of the variable(s).

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Determine likely cause of the deviation experienced.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Factors that influence the deviating variable(s) are identified in accordance with specified requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Factors that cause the deviation include equipment and machinery, process materials, consumables, process conditions, peripheral and external system conditions and human interventions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Factors are considered to determine the possible causes for the deviation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Cause of deviation from operating norm is identified in accordance with workplace procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Implement corrective action.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Corrective actions as prescribed by (standard operating) instructions are identified in terms of normal operating standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Chosen corrective actions are implemented in accordance with operational procedures.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Corrective action includes reporting the problem, asking for assistance and making corrective adjustments to equipment and machinery within own level of authority.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Actions are documented in accordance with (standard operating) instructions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Evaluate the impact of corrective action.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Situation is monitored in accordance with operational procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Impact of corrective action is compared to expected results.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Further corrective action is taken if the results are unsatisfactory after sufficient time is allowed for actions to take effect.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Appropriate action is taken to ensure the maintenance of changes and safe conditions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Actions are documented in accordance with (standard operating) instructions.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 2 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency.
  • Only an assessor with considerable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
