PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of identifying the various types of forced induction systems, components and parts to prepare and position the vehicle and to diagnose and repair forced induction system and component faults and to compile and submit a report. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are already competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

All work is performed with little or no supervision in accordance with operational procedures, repair manual specifications and procedures in accordance with SHE legislation.

  • Read and interpret includes the specific technical data, tools and test equipment required and the type of induction system identified.
  • Tools and test equipment includes scan tool, low pressure air-hose, dash gauge, stethoscope.
  • Technical data includes specifications and manuals, product manufacturers specifications, customer requirements.
  • Type of system includes turbochargers/superchargers (blower driven).
  • Superchargers include three basic types: Centrifugal, Rotor (Roote's) and Vane type.

    The operation of forced induction systems is explained in terms of the key differences between particular systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The application of forced induction systems is explained in terms of the construction and operation of the system. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Inspect the forced induction system (turbo chargers/superchargers) for condition. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Inspect include checking for error codes with the scan tool.
  • Error codes include knock sensor, throttle position sensor, manifold pressure sensor and manifold temperature sensor.
  • System condition includes connection of vacuum lines to the waste gate and oil lines to the turbocharger, waste gate diaphragm leakage and operation, boost pressure, lack of power, colour of engine smoke and abnormal noises.

    The forced induction system is physically inspected for condition and faults in accordance with repair manual procedures.

    Faults identified are recorded in accordance with repair manual and quality procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reasons for inspecting forced induction systems are explained in terms of identification of faults. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Reasons for selecting correct tools and equipment are explained in terms of the type of work and productivity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Diagnose and repair the forced induction system (turbochargers/superchargers). 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Diagnose include recognising system faults such as inadequate boost pressure, leaking shaft seals, damaged turbine or compressor wheels, excess boost, contaminated oil, stuck by-pass actuator, internal rotor or housing wear and bearing noise.
  • Repair includes the removal and replacement of a new Turbo or Supercharger components, disassembly, assembly, cleaning, measuring, visual inspection, lubricating, testing and adjusting.
