PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learners will be capable of maintaining the physical resources in a library. These resources include the building, furniture, fittings, equipment and the library environments.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Maintaining a comfortable environment for users and staff.
  • Monitoring the use and maintenance of equipment.
  • Routinely inspect furniture, fixtures and fittings. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF level 4 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 4 or equivalent.

    Maintain a comfortable environment for users and staff.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Service area maintenance is described according to institutional codes and policies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Display shelves and notice boards are kept updated and attractive on a daily basis. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Occupational health and safety is explained in terms of the legislative requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Potential health and safety hazards are identified and corrected according to institutional policy and the Occupational health and Safety Act. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Monitor the use and maintenance of equipment. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Equipment includes, but is not limited to:
  • Audio-visual equipment, DVD's, OHP's, Computer hardware, photocopier, facsimile machine, cash register, security systems and PA systems.

    Methods of monitoring use of equipment are explained according to institutional availability, policy and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Operation of equipment is explained according to its function, use and maintenance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Operation of equipment is demonstrated according to manufacturer's operating manual. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Damaged and unsafe equipment is identified and appropriate corrective measures are undertaken according to institutional policy and procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Routinely inspect of furniture, fixtures and fittings.

    Furniture, fixtures and fittings are inspected according to institutional policy and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Unsafe and damaged furniture, fixtures and fittings are identified and appropriate corrective action is undertaken in accordance with institutional procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Unsafe and damaged furniture, fixtures and fittings are recorded and reported according to institutional policy and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Use of furniture, fixtures and fittings is monitored to prevent damage and abuse in accordance with institutional procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of the integrated competence described in this Unit Standard.

  • Assessors must be registered with a relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors must be in possession of a Qualification related to Library Practice or a related sub-field of Communication and Language Studies at a minimum of NQF level 5.
