This unit standard requires of learners to demonstrate the ability to identify a Clean Development Mechanism project in a workplace.

Learners credited with this unit standard are capable of:
  • Discussing the history of greenhouse gas abatement methods and the legislative framework and objectives of the Kyoto Protocol.
  • Describing the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Clean Development Mechanism.
  • Explaining the importance of the energy sector in South Africa and why CDM is critical for the country.
  • Explaining how South African and international legislation governs and affects CDM.
  • Describing the CDM project cycle, how the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders are determined and how a potential CDM project is motivated for a specific workplace.
  • Explaining certified emissions trading.

    The legislative framework of the Kyoto Protocol is explained in terms of applying the Protocol to avert climate change.

    Sources of six greenhouse gases, specified in the Kyoto Protocol, are discussed in terms of the rationale for their selection.

    Describe the United Nations Framework Convention on climate change and the clean development mechanism.

    The purpose of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is described in terms of efforts to address the challenge posed by climate change.
