PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector.

This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of transporting explosives and accessories using a self-propelled mobile machine in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the transportation of explosives and accessories by means of a self-propelled mobile machine.
  • Prepare the self propelled mobile machine for transporting and loading of explosives.
  • Transport explosives and accessories. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is recommended that persons attempting this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Follow basic occupational health and safety practices at NQF Level 1.
  • Take charge of and drive an articulating vehicle in an underground mine at NQF Level 1.
  • Take charge of and drive a non-articulating vehicle in an underground mine at NQF Level 1.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The significant risks and consequences associated with the work-related hazards pertaining to the transportation of explosives and accessories by means of a self-propelled mobile machine are explained according to specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range must include:
  • Towing and speed limits.
  • Traffic Control Systems.
  • Securing of load.
  • Handling of explosives.
  • Fire to equipment/machinery.
  • Brake failure.
  • Collisions.
  • Radio frequency emitting devices.

    The required personal protective equipment is available, fit for purpose and used in accordance with its design and specific requirements.

    The required tools and equipment are available, fit for purpose and used according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The workplace, parking area and roadway are examined and workplace hazards are dealt with according to specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range must include hazards relating to:
  • Ground conditions.

    The pre-use and after start inspection is conducted according to specified requirements. Defects identified are dealt with according to specified requirements.

    The consequences to occupational safety, occupational health and productivity if specified requirements are not adhered to whilst preparing to transport explosives and accessories using a self-propelled mobile machine is explained according to specified requirements.

    The area and equipment where explosives and accessories are to be transported are continuously examined for critical workplace hazards and these hazards are dealt with according to specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Critical workplace hazards must include:

  • Traffic Control Systems.
  • Securing of load.
  • Handling of explosives.
  • Fire to equipment/machinery.
  • Brake failure.

    The self-propelled mobile machine is parked in the designated area, and prepared for subsequent operations according to specific requirements.

    Reports are completed and submitted in accordance with specified requirements.

    The consequence to occupational safety, occupational health and productivity if specified requirements are not adhered to whilst transporting/loading and off loading of explosives and accessories using a self-propelled mobile machine is explained.
