PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners will obtain in depth knowledge about camouflage, concealment and deception principles and tactics. The competencies acquired in this unit standard will be used in an image interpretation environment. This unit will enable learners to have an understanding of the aspects of terrain, functions and tactics of conventional and unconventional warfare. Learners will also have underpinning theoretical knowledge of ground based weapon systems.

Qualifying learners will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of terminology used in the military environment.
  • Analyse terrain on an image.
  • Apply doctrine and tactics of conventional warfare as an aid in the analysis of imagery.
  • Analyse weapon systems on an image.
  • Apply doctrine and tactics of unconventional warfare as an aid in the analysis of imagery.
  • Detect and analyse camouflage, concealment and deception (CCD) on an image.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Standard terminology is used when compiling an image interpretation report on conventional and unconventional operations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Conventional refers to but are not limited to low intensity conflict, high intensity conflict, bridge head, area defence, primary position (artillery, mortar and armour), mobile defence, arc of fire, strong point, defensive station, defensive post, intermediate position, defensive area, surprise, assembly area, delay position, outpost and section.
  • Unconventional refers to but is not limited to Revolution, revolutionary warfare, insurgent, terrorist, guerrilla, power bases (political, military, economical, welfare/social).
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Standard terminology is used when describing concealment tactics on aerial imagery. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Terminology refers to but is not limited to camouflage, camouflage net, concealment, deception and dummy positions.

    Analyse terrain on an image. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Terrain refers to both natural and man-made landscapes.

    Terrain on an image is analysed in terms of its features. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Features refer to but are not limited to broad landscape types, rock types, rivers, coastal zones, dams and lakes, swamps, water points and the ocean.

    Natural landscapes on an image are analysed in terms of their geomorphology. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Geomorphology refers to but is limited to topography, landforms, drainage, and vegetation.

    Land coverage on an image is described as a precise type. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types refers to but is not limited to forests, range lands, barren land, Mediterranean plants and shrubs.

    Man-made surface features on an image are described in terms of its characteristics.

  • Features refer to but are not limited to settlements, systems of communication, access routes and agricultural areas.
