PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard and in combination with sport specific expertise, will be able to coach athletics to children at primary school level. The qualifying learner will be able to introduce children to different athletic events so that they will be able to compete later on. At this level, the coach should be able to improvise, use simulations and environments to develop the athletic awareness required for future competition.

The learner will be able to explain the basic components of athletics and athletic training, showing understanding of the theory behind the sport as well as be able to demonstrate the techniques and skills needed by children starting out in athletics.

The sub-field will benefit by having a cadre of personnel in this field with the correct, industry-standardised knowledge and skills.

On achievement of this unit standard, the learner will be able to:
  • Describe the development and sociology of athletics as a sport.
  • Explain the safety requirements of athletics for children.
  • Explain the basic Rules applicable to athletics for children.
  • Plan and implement training programs for children.
  • Conduct basic athletic coaching activities for children.
  • Review the coaching session.
  • Range: The learner will be able to work unsupervised, at community primary school and community level and could also work under the supervision of a senior coach, as part of a multi disciplinary team coaching athletics to children.

    Athletics and the coaching of athletics are explained in terms of the benefits to the community and schools.

    Stakeholder support and the role of stakeholders are described in terms of the way in which they advance athletics in a community.

    Parents, school principal, athletes, officials in the community and the provincial athletics federation/school governing bodies.

    The role of women/girls in athletics is explained from a historical perspective.

    The basic Rules of athletics are explained to ensure fairness and understanding of the principles of athletics.

    Includes but not limited to rules pertaining to sprints, hurdles, relays, middle distance, long jump, high jump, shot put and javelin.

    The role and duties of officials at athletic meetings are explained in relation to the upholding of athletics rules in the different events.

    The importance of understanding the basic rules applicable to athletics is explained with specific reference to the impact on the child if rules are ignored.

  • Athletics differentiates between primary and high schools coaching by using the term "kids" for children 6 -13 years. The term "youth to junior" is used for 14 years onwards in the applicable athletic events.
  • "Kids are coached and trained for domestic/local competition whereas "youth and junior:" can compete at provincial level.
