PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for personal development to help the learner identify and manage stress in his/her own life.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing stress and its effect on daily life.
  • Identifying causes of stress in own life.
  • Identifying reactions to stress in own life.
  • Indicating techniques to help manage stress in own life. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this unit standard is stress in an individual's own life situation:
  • Facets of life include, but are not limited to, environment, financial, relationships, spiritual and emotional.
  • Relational strategies to reduce stress include emotional support, practical support and professional help, asking for help and sharing the problem.
  • Mental strategies to reduce stress include positive self-talk, changing of attitude, imagery and affirmations.
  • Physical strategies to reduce stress include exercise, relaxation, time management, nutrition, breathing exercises, meditation, and muscle relaxation exercises.
  • Stressors may be environmental, financial, relationship, spiritual and emotional.

    The concept of stress is explained with examples from daily life. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Physiological changes in the body associated with stress are identified and an indication is given of the effect of prolonged stress on health. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Positive and negative stress are identified and an indication is given of the impact of too much, too little or just enough stress in a person's life. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify the causes of stress in own life.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Negative stressors in own life are identified and categorised in terms of physical and emotional stress. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Positive stressors in own life are identified and an indication is given of how positive stress influences own behaviour. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Stress in interpersonal relationships is identified and an indication is given of why certain situations and behaviours cause stress. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The relationship between personality type and the way in which one experiences stress is explained with examples.

    Instances when own behaviour creates stressful responses in others are identified and an indication is given of when an individual can cause a situation to become stressful.

    Healthy lifestyle is explained as a way of managing stress and an indication is given of changes needed in own lifestyle as a means of managing stress.

    Healthy lifestyle includes, but is not limited to, goal setting, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects, environmental, financial.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Strategies for managing own stress are investigated in relation to specific personal issues. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Stress that an individual can manage is identified in own life and an indication is given of when an individual needs to seek help.
