PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for managers, Human Resource Managers, Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and people who work with people who are abused. It will lead learners to acquire knowledge and skill to effectively manage risks and reactions associated with abuse in the workplace.

A manager in the context of this Unit Standard is the manager of a small business and first line managers of business units, team leaders and supervisors in medium and large organisations. The term business unit implies a small business, cost centre, section or department.

The Unit Standard was developed as a means of contributing to change in leadership focus and empowering managers to look at people issues.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Recognising indicators of abuse in the workplace.
  • Explaining the potential impact of abuse on a business.
  • Explaining how to deal with abuse in the workplace.
  • Investigating a case of employee abuse in order to propose a business strategy. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 2. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard includes, but is not limited to gender, physical, verbal, emotional and economic abuse, bullying, threats, intimidation, controlling, dismissing, denying, blaming others, pecking order privilege and any other form of abuse in the workplace including sexual harassment.

    Recognise indicators of abuse in the workplace.

    The concept of abuse is explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Abuse includes physical, sexual, emotional, financial and verbal abuse.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reasons why people abuse others are investigated for physical, emotional and verbal abuse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Observable indicators of abuse are identified and an indication is given of behaviours that are symptomatic of abuse. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the potential impact of abuse on a business.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Non-financial ways in which abuse can affect a business environment are investigated and an indication is given of the effect on both employer and employees. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The direct financial impact of abuse on a business is identified and an indication is given of different ways in which abuse can impact on productivity and the bottom line. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain how to deal with abuse in the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An organisation's policies and procedures are reviewed and an indication is given of the process to be followed in managing instances of abuse in the workplace. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Policies and Procedures include those that deal with the abuser and the abused.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The roles of the employer and employee in dealing with abuse are explained with reference to stated policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The procedure to be followed in referring an abused employee is explained graphically. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Techniques to reasonably accommodate an abused employee are described for different scenarios. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Investigate a case of employee abuse in order to propose a business strategy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An abused employee is identified and an indication is given of the form of abuse and the potential impact on the business. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An abusive employee is identified and an indication is given of the form of abuse and the potential impact on the business. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A plan is proposed to deal with the specific scenario in line with an organisation's policies and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A plan should include, but is not limited to policy and procedures, code of conduct, action plan and method of evaluating of the strategy for the abuser and the abused.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of confidentiality in dealing with an abused employee is explained and an indication is given of the consequences of breaking confidentiality.

  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.
