PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard will be useful for people who have completed the introductory courses to warship safety management and bridge watch-keeping within a naval context, and wish to progress as officers within a sub-surface environment. This qualification will give them the opportunity to develop and balance their practical skills with the essential knowledge needed to earn a formal qualification in Submarine Operations Management.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: |

|
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Demonstrate knowledge of hazards associated with diving a submarine. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Hazards associated with failure to ensure watertight integrity of the vessel are listed and explained consistently with naval safety procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Risks associated with a partial or complete power failure during diving operations are explained with reference to the diving angle of the vessel, subsequent maneuverability, ability to re-surface and implications for personnel onboard. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The consequences of failing to sound the correct diving alarms are explained with reference to the safety of personnel and that of the submarine. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The importance of maintaining a stable dive trim is explained in terms of naval safety procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Critical safety issues related to each specific type of dive are explained in line with SAN and international safety guidelines. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Types of submarine dives include quick dive, running dive and the stationary dive. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Prepare to dive a submarine. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The procedures for preparing the vessel to dive are explained in accordance with SAN standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Procedures include:
|
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Rigging commands are given clearly, concisely and correct according to naval terminology. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Lines of communication with the operations room are maintained and operational readiness of all equipment is confirmed in accordance with SAN standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Equipment and instruments in the control station are correctly manned and readiness for diving is confirmed with the diving officer according to SAN standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Communication with the bridge confirms a surface traffic state that allows for safe diving of the submarine without harm to the vessel and personnel. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
The vessel is confirmed to be watertight, secure and ready to dive and the Commanding Officer is informed in accordance with SAN standard operating procedures. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Dive the submarine. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
An explanation of each different type of submarine dive are consistent with SAN standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Types of submarine dives include:
|
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The diving alarm is initiated correctly in accordance with SAN rules and regulations. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The submarine is dived according to SAN standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Lines of communication with the control station and diving officer ensure that the submarine is maintained at the desired depth. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Safety of personnel and the vessel is maintained at all times. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Maintain a stable dived state. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The concepts of neutral, positive and negative buoyancy are explained with reference to their implications for diving and surfacing of submarines, in accordance with generally accepted understanding in a naval context. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The concept of trim is explained with reference to centre of gravity, the hydrostatic effect of variable ballast tanks, and the hydrodynamic effect of control planes, in accordance with SAN operating principles. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The significances of changes in water pressure, density and depth are described and explained in terms of their effect on buoyancy. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Measures to counter the unstable equilibrium of submerged submarines are described with reference to the continual operation of depth control tanks or control surfaces. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Communication with the diving officer confirms the dived position of the submarine as intended and the Captain is informed as per standing orders. |
