ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Critical safety issues related to emergency surfacing procedures are explained in accordance with South African Navy and international safety guidelines. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Hazards associated with malfunctioning hydroplanes are described with outlines of their possible impact on executing surfacing manoeuvres safely. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The consequences of failing to sound the correct surfacing alarms are explained with reference to the safety of personnel and that of the submarine. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
An explanation of the risks associated with surface traffic is consistent with International Rules for Preventing Collision at Sea. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Prepare to bring a submarine to periscope depth. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The procedures for preparing to take the vessel to periscope depth are explained in accordance with SAN standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Procedures may include:
|
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Submariners assigned to surface lookout are ensured to be dressed appropriately for prevailing weather conditions, equipped with binoculars and stationed in the conning tower in good time. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Lines of communication with the operations room are maintained and operational readiness of all equipment is confirmed in accordance with SAN standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
All control station equipment and instruments are manned and readiness to surface is confirmed in accordance with SAN standard operating procedures. |

|
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The surfacing alarm is correctly sounded and accompanying instructions and/or information provided are in line with accepted naval terminology, and prepare personnel for surfacing. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The submarine is safely manoeuvred to periscope depth and maintained at a speed throughout which allows for control without broaching. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
At periscope depth careful periscope observations and communication with the bridge confirm surface traffic state and any threats or hazards to surfacing. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Surfacing manoeuvres are consistent with SAN standard operating procedures and conform to international safety guidelines. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
The safety of personnel and the vessel is maintained at all times. |
