PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who are operating in the hunting sector and are required to handle and process hunting trophies. Learners completing this unit standard will be able to skin, handle, treat and dispatch hunting trophies and will furthermore be able to:
  • Successfully skin and cape an animal by using the correct methods for the various types of mounts.
  • Treat and mark trophies.
  • Store trophies safely and securely.
  • Arrange documentation, dispatch and transport trophy to approved taxidermist.
  • Liaise with client and taxidermist.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner is competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3. It is further assumed that the learner is capable of conducting hunting for recreational purposes and that the learner has been operational as an amateur hunter for a minimum of two years.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Skin and cape an animal by using the correct methods for the various types of mounts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A suitable definition is given of the term "trophy" in line with applicable legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An overview is given of the various skinning methods for different types of mounts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Animals are skinned and/or caped using the correct method suited to the mount. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range includes flat mounts, rug mounts, full mounts, shoulder mounts, pedestal, half and European mounts; special preparation of skins prone to hairslip.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Treat and mark trophies.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The salting and chemical treatment of skins is completed according to relevant procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The cleaning of the skull of a trophy is concluded according to prescribed procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate markings are placed on individual trophies as per relevant procedures.

    Store trophies safely and securely.

    An outline is provided of precautions to be taken to ensure that trophies are safely stored. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A description is given of the correct procedures to follow in order to store trophies securely. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Instructions are adhered to for the safe storage of trophies. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Away from predators; rodents and insects; secure storage; facilities and equipment.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Arrange documentation, dispatch and transport trophy to a taxidermist.

    Legislation is complied with regards to the dispatch and transport of the trophy for export.

    Permit requirements, transportation and handling, taxidermy instructions.

    Pertinent documentation is completed to ensure compliance with relevant legislation applicable to the transportation and dispatching of animal trophies.

    The Taxidermist is correctly briefed on client requirements in terms of preparation of and the dispatching of the trophy animal(s).
