PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who are required to escort a client on an entire hunt from beginning to end.

The learner will be able to manage and maintain facilities and equipment needed for a hunt, as well as manage all staff needs and will also be able to:
  • Host a client professionally.
  • Plan a hunting trip.
  • Make proper use of hunting equipment.
  • Guide a client into a position to hunt specific wild animals in the safest manner possible.
  • Dispose of the carcass.
  • Conclude the hunt.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner is competent in Communication Literacy at NQF Level 3. It is further assumed that the learner is capable of conducting hunting for recreational purposes and that the learner has been operational as an amateur hunter for a minimum of two years. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard is a description of skills that must be demonstrated practically. It downplays the theoretical and emphasises the practical aspects of the learning required by the prospective professional hunter.

    Host a client professionally. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    The relationship between professional hunter and client is maintained according to industry standards and requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Every business transaction undertaken and agreement made with the client is honoured, reflecting adherence to principles of integrity, honesty and sound ethics.

    Client needs are addressed and satisfied according to industry standards and requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Plan a hunting experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A Hunting experience is planed in order to meet the needs of the client as well as any applicable legal restrictions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Identification of trophy or animal, venue, time-frames, type of hunting.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A selection is made, in consultation with the client, of a weapon and ammunition suited to the hunting of the intended quarry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A description is presented to the client of the locality in which the hunt is to take place, with special reference to its most important physical features. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An explanation is given to the client of the impact of trophy hunting on genetic diversity within the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An outline is provided of how hunting is practised with referenced to principles of conservation ethics. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Use hunting equipment according to industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate use is made of all relevant hunting equipment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Binoculars, range finders, scopes, radios, photographic equipment, rifle rests.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A fully equipped hunting vehicle is used to transport the hunting party and equipment to the location of the hunt. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All equipment is stored and safely transported from the location of the hunt. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Guide a client into a position to hunt specific wild animals safely. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The client is given a hunting experience in which the professional hunter demonstrates expertise in the application of relevant skills. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Assessors need to pay careful attention to every one the following skills: species identification, use of a vehicle; use of a firearm; application of tracking skills; use of cover, hides and camouflage; assessing wind direction; estimating distances; use of baits; judgment and selection of the best trophy.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Measures are put in place to minimise the environmental impact of the hunt. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An assessment is made of the minimum size of trophy of a specific species under both simulated and veldt conditions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Assess the minimum requirement for the specific measuring method.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Rules and regulations are observed governing permissible hunting hours, the prohibition on the consumption of alcoholic beverages and ensuring the safety of every member of the hunting party.

    Dispose of the carcass.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Carcass recovery is carried out with due regard to hygiene, local protocols and relevant legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The carcass is field dressed for its intended use. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Meat and/or trophy.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The carcass is skinned and the offal appropriately disposed of in terms of conventions or agreements with the landowner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Trophy management is carried out with due regard to the physical condition of the carcass, the preservation of the environment, legal requirements and the requests of the client. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Conclude the hunting experience.

    Post-hunt protocol is observed with regard to the settlement of accounts and the payment of tips, as agreed or as required by convention. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Administrative requirements are satisfied that relate to the conclusion of the hunt. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Steps are taken to ensure overall post-hunt safety. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The packing up of equipment, the safe transport of firearms and ammunition, and the clearing away of all traces of the hunt.
