PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for people who operate in the professional hunting sector and who are required to assess and record the quality and size of a trophy animal within the context of the delivery of hunting services to national and international clients. The learner achieving this unit standard will gain competence in assessing and recording the quality and size of the trophy, and will be able to:
  • Apply the measuring system of Rowland Ward.
  • Apply the measuring system of Safari Club International.
  • Assess trophy values of huntable trophy animals. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner is competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3. It is further assumed that learner attempting this unit standard has been operational as an amateur hunter for a period of two years.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Assess trophy values of huntable trophy animals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Methods of assessing the value of trophies are outlined with a view to practical application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The minimum size of trophy of specific species are assessed under simulated field conditions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Include trophies, skulls, photographs, minimum size in order to qualify according to the RW or SCI system.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Trophy values of huntable indigenous wild animals are assessed in the field with reference to their size and quality. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    Equipment can include binoculars, telescope or other measuring equipment.

    Apply the measuring system of Rowland Ward.

    An outline is provided of the minimum requirements for each measuring method used within the context of accurate measurement and recording of species. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An overview is given outlining the differences between various methods of measurement as it applies to the accurate recording of species. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Animals are correctly measured with the use of measuring equipment and the details are recorded as prescribed.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
