PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to design an advanced gas installation within the requirements of the standards and regulations governing gas installations.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Define the design scope of an advanced gas installation.
  • Select advanced appliances and design advanced applications.
  • Design the gas storage and delivery system for an advanced gas installation.
  • Design the delivery piping configuration for an advanced gas installation.
  • Verify the overall safety of an advanced gas installation design.
  • Prepare design documents. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Learners should also have been declared competent in the outcomes of the Unit Standard "Design a LPG or natural gas installation". 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The outcomes of this Unit Standard are aimed at the design of any one of five different advanced gas installation fields:
  • Medical gas system design.
  • Industrial gas system design.
  • Pipeline and pipe network supply systems.
  • Basic automotive gas system design.
  • Advanced automotive gas system design.

    In order to obtain the credits associated with this Unit Standard, learners should be declared competent in all the outcomes focused on one of these fields.

    The typical context of this unit standard assumes a new gas installation site or an existing site requiring modifications. The typical scope of this unit standard is aimed at the design of a range of advanced installations including medical, industrial and pipeline and pipe network systems.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Define the design scope of an advanced gas installation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Limitations of own design authority are described within the installation context and as outlined by applicable regulations and own licensing scope. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Limitations include but are not limited to number of cylinders, bulk pressure vessels, system pressure, application types, cryogenic equipment and on-site generation equipment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose of a proposed advanced gas installation is defined in terms of design and customer requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Requirements include but are not limited to the gas type, the application, storage and supply method and the intended duty (load) of the system.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A basic system layout sketch is prepared indicating positioning of delivery system, routing of piping and positioning of the applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Special requirements are analysed in terms of overall design impact. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Special requirements include routing, delivery system type, capacity and pressure, special features, components, appliances.
  • Analysis includes determining the viability and impact of special requirements on the overall design, conflicts with standards and regulations and whether the design falls within the scope of own licensing authority.

    The volume requirements for all appliances and applications are determined using applicable engineering techniques.

    Different components associated with the appliances and applications are selected and sized using accepted design practice.

    A detailed layout sketch is prepared indicating positioning of appliances and applications as well as the routing of piping.

    Design the gas storage and delivery system for an advanced gas installation.

    A gas storage and delivery concept is selected based on system requirements, suitability for the application and client specification. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The storage and delivery system could include cylinders, dumpies, on-site generation, bulk pressure tanks.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The gas storage and delivery system is specified based on the overall appliance and application duty and by using applicable engineering techniques.

  • System specification should include the delivery volume, pressure and minimum storage capacity required.
  • Techniques include calculations, data sheets, tables and other graphical methods.

  • System specification should include the delivery volume and pressure required in every part of the system.
  • Engineering techniques include calculations, data sheets, tables and other graphical methods.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different components associated with the piping/reticulation system are selected and sized using accepted design practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components should include but are not limited to piping, manifolds, valves, regulators, fittings, metering.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A detailed layout sketch is prepared indicating routing of the piping/reticulation components.

    Verify the overall safety of an advanced gas installation design.
