Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to demonstrate understanding of speciality gas systems and equipment.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Describe typical speciality gas applications in South Africa.
  • Describe the equipment and configurations used in different types of speciality gas installations.
  • Describe different speciality gas installation delivery and control equipment.
  • Describe different speciality gas applications.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of any learner within the gas installations environment, by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field. The knowledge, skills and understanding demonstrated in this unit standard are essential for upliftment, social and economic transformation in the gas installation environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

    The context of this unit standard is based on typical existing speciality gas installations. The scope of this unit standard includes one of the following installation types, but is not limited to:
  • Utility air systems.
  • Freezing.
  • Cooling.
  • Shrinking.
  • Heat treatment.
  • Water treatment.
  • Blanketing.
  • Food.
  • Welding.
  • Speciality gas supply installations.

    The different applications of speciality gas installations and their associated gas types are listed and compared based on a wide range of current South African applications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Applications include but are not limited freezing, cooling, shrinking, heat treatment, water treatment, blanketing, food, welding, industrial supply installations.
  • Gas types include but are not limited to ammonia, hydrogen, argon, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, LNG and helium.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The layout and functioning of different speciality gas installation types are described based on typical South African installations and accepted industry terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The main components of typical speciality gas installations and their roles are identified using accepted industry terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Material selection considerations for typical speciality gas installations are described in terms of both safety and fit for purpose considerations. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the equipment and configurations used in different types of speciality gas installations.

    The components of each type of speciality gas installation are identified using industry terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The advantages and disadvantages of different speciality gas installation configurations are explained based on industry case studies and -experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Indicators and reasons for poor speciality gas installation performance are described using typical industry examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Describe different speciality gas installation delivery and control equipment. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Delivery and control configurations should include but is not limited to bulk pressure vessels (bullets and spheres), cylinder banks, dumpies, compressors, pumps, pipe networks, valves, cryogenic valves, mixing equipment, regulation equipment, vaporisers and control equipment.

    Indicators and reasons for poor application performance are described based on installation shortcomings using typical industry examples. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 3 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency.
  • Only an Assessor with considerable first hand experience in gas installations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Direct observation in simulated or actual work conditions is required.
